2 Reasons Against Amendment One

I just want to take a moment to say why I am against Amendment One and will vote against it tomorrow.

1. When I asked a friend of mine who is anti-gay rights why he was so vehemently against something that really doesn’t have any impact on him whatesoever, he told me that he doesn’t want his son to grow up in a world where being gay is viewed as being ok because he might decide to be gay.

Let’s back that up to it’s real argument. The amendment (and other discriminatory legislation) is about punishing gays. Its goal is to make the world so inhospitable to homosexuality as to try to force gays to simply stop being gay. Everything about this is wrong. Amendment One is wrong because the basis for it is not only discriminatory against any non-traditional families – but punitive for the failure to conform.

2. Every argument I have heard for Amendment One, including ones from the deluge of ads, is based on the Bible. I’m not going to argue the Bible because, quite simply, the Bible can’t be argued. The people who use the Bible as a shield for their hatred and fear don’t want to listen to reason. But this is not a theocracy, and basing laws of our land on some passage of the Bible tries to reverse this. Freedom of religion is sacred, and that does not mean that I’m free to practice your flavor of Christianity. It means I’m free to practice (or not) MY religion. This amendment imposes a religion on the population, and that is something I can’t stand by to watch happen. I won’t be quiet about it. I will vote against. Please, join me.
